John Szarkowski “The Great Hidden Influence on Photography”

(John was the Photography curator at the Museum of Modern Art in New York

My comments:

Recognizing Greatness

John Szarkowski recognized photography as an art form before it was accepted as such by many in academia. He used his incredible influence, and amazing understanding of the medium, to seek out and display photographic works of art.

For that we are all grateful, but unlike a critic, he enhanced a photographers reputation, and made the simple medium a legendary legacy. Once you were in MOMA you had achieved a status unequaled by any prize or contest, you literally became a part of the History of the medium.

He was more than just an art curator, as he followed much more than art photography. Fashion of Avedon, cigarette butts by Penn, and Ansel Adams were all a part of Art photography in Szarkowski's mind, for that broad scope and insight we owe him a huge debt of gratitude.

Gods speed to a legend.

“The Richard Avedon Look”

My comments:

Richard Avedon … gave birth to Fashion photography as we know it today. With each new assignment he molded and shaped it into a visual art form. He defined visual composition, in line and form, with a style that so closely imitated modern art that it changed photography and artists around the world.

From his early days working in the darkroom, he mastered the medium as an apprentice. On his 1st day he dropped a negative, and inadvertently stepped on it. Apologetically he confessed what had happened, and was told to print the negative, and retouch the print to hide the obvious scratches now enlarged on the print.

His fame was almost instantaneous. At 20 he shot for Harpers Bazaar Magazine working with art director Peter Bogdonvitch, where he shot models in the streets, elegant draped woman in a full length gown with elephants. His life became a circus of creative genius.

Avedon was as famous a celebrity as the people he photographed, no matter who they were…

Subject: Shrimp Magazine arrived!!

Hi Shawn,

Thanks so much for sending me a copy of Shrimp Business magazine. Wow! It is pretty neat to get both the front and back cover. Shawn, you did a really great job designing, laying out, and especially cropping the images in the magazine. Frankly, there is nothing more important than how a photo is cropped.

This is a  really classy, 1st rate job.

Also I was wondering if I could get a few more copies for my portfolio.

Thank you so much,

Joe

RIP: Red Auerback died recently.  I had the chance to photograph Red many years ago, as I remember our conversation, Red was sitting back smoking a cigar when I approached him. Red politely asked me if I wanted him to put his cigar out, as he was representing "New Balance Running Shoes"  and I said, "No that is your trademark!" Red smiled as he knew I knew who he was, The GREATEST basketball coach in NBA history, a legend. After I was done the Marketing Director of New Balance came over and said, "That is the most cooperation we have gotten from him yet!"
